Our last Investment Club meeting focused on real estate investment trusts. A REIT is a company that owns, and in most cases operates, income-producing real estate. REITs in Canada are an approximately $80 Billion market cap industry. From their creation in 1993, Canadian REITs have grown and provided millions of Canadians with stable income from a pool of real estate investments. REITs typically offer higher dividends than stocks and offer certain tax advantages.

We started the last meeting by reviewing three videos on REITs and then applied some of the useful Investment concepts that we have learned so far by reviewing the 3 largest REITs in Canada: Canadian Apartment Properties, RioCan, and Choice Properties. Investment Club Meeting on January 9th, 2024

Our Investment Club meeting on January 9th at 2:00 p.m. was on Warren Buffett’s Top 5 Largest Holdings for 2023 as identified by Simply Wall Street.

The meeting started with viewing and discussing two videos on Warren Buffet:

The group then reviewed Warren Buffett’s Top 5 Stock Holdings for 2023. The conclusions that the group came to about adding each of these stocks to our practice portfolio were:

Apple – Hold, should investigate Microsoft
Bank of America – Hold, like to look at some of its competitors. Are Canadian banks better positioned that US. banks going forward?
Chevron – Hold, Is Oil production a dying business? Have we reached Peak Oil? Look at alternatives like renewable energy or battery producers.
Coco-Cola – Hold, is the company at risk due to changing tastes, e.g. competitors such as non-alcoholic beer, company seems to be growing slower than competitors
American Express – Buy, like that the Company is growing, increasing earnings and revenues, dividend is low. Like to compare the company to Visa and MasterCard.

Warren Buffett’s portfolio consists of stocks of public companies which he owns via his holding company Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A – class A common stock, and BRK.B – class B common stock). Warren Buffett is a Chairman, CEO and biggest shareholder of Berkshire Hathaway Inc.

Warren Buffett’s personal portfolio consists of his ~16% stake in Berkshire Hathaway (worth more than $118 billion) and shareholdings in two banks: JP Morgan, and Wells Fargo. To learn more about the detailed contents of his portfolio:

Investment Club Meeting on November 14th, 2023

  • What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?
  • AI Explained: Why is it different this time?
  • How to Invest in AI for Beginners

We also had a demonstration of using GPT Chat with Bing to conduct some relevant searches about Artificial Intelligence.

I also mentioned that I would provide access to another video – How Powerful will AI be in 2030. To see these four videos:

At the end of the meeting, we looked at a collection of 9 companies that were the heaviest users of AI (ones that will facilitate the adoption of AI or will have their business significantly optimized), called Top 9 US AI Stocks for 2022.

Previous Meetings of the Investment Club

Summaries of our meetings from September 15, 2020, to the final one on September 13, 2022, are available in Blogs called Investment Club News.

There also are a variety of files of interest to investors in the Club Posts section, and recordings of presentations given to the Investment Club in the Videos section.

Benefits of Belonging to an Investment Club

The main benefit of belonging to the Investment Club is that it provides many opportunities to learn more about investing. These opportunities include listening to a variety of speakers online from the Investment Community on topics of interest to the group. Other presentations may be given by members.

In the past, topics of presentations have included Advisory Services, fundamental principles of investing, stock-picking, estate planning, and discussions of the investment environment.

The other opportunity to learn is to learn through doing. First there is the opportunity to learn more by researching an idea and selecting a video for the group to watch. There is also an option of preparing a presentation for other members or by investigating a stock for the meeting.

Secondly, the Investment Club had a portfolio of stocks suggested by members in the past. Club members participated in making investment decisions and managing a phantom portfolio of over $600,000. The performance of these stocks was tracked on a monthly basis and the portfolio adjusted at each meeting. This discussion provided an opportunity for our members to tap into the insights and general knowledge of the Investment Club’s members as well as benefit from any research done by these members.

As an example, see the Club Posts section that shows average price/earnings ratios for certain companies in the article called Value stocks are cheap.

Finally, there is a social aspect to the meetings in getting together and discussing their ideas.

Upcoming Meetings

Upcoming meetings will be held on the second Tuesday of the month at 2:00 p.m.

Our Members

The Investment Club was open to everyone in the Probus. There were 33 members in the Investment Club with about 15 to 20 members attending a meeting. Almost all of the members are retired so that some of their investments are a part of their post retirement income. The members included those who were anxious to learn more about investing, those who were actively managing their own portfolios, and those who have acted as investment advisors and provide expert insights.
