Through the Grapevine #50

After taking a break in January, the February 2025 Wine Tasting meeting was on Thursday, February 6th at Mary Mulligan’s apartment with all 14 members attending.

The two most popular wines tried were the Bask Vineyard’s Pinot Grigio from Niagara, Ontario and Tom Gore’s Cabernet Sauvignon from California.

Niagara, Ontario, Bask Vineyard, Pinot Grigio

This is a dry, crisp and balanced wine with green pear and lime zest flavours. Refreshingly clean, with a polished finish. The Alcohol/Volume is 12% and the Sugar Content is 2 g/L. Sip on the patio or pair with perch tacos and fresh Pico de Gallo. The wine costs $13.95. 9 out of 14 wine tasters said that they would buy it.

California, Sonoma, Cabernet Savignon

Tom Gore’s Cabernet Sauvignon from Sonoma California is no longer available due to the recent import restrictions placed on U.S. wines by the Ontario Government. When it was purchased, it cost $19.95 per bottle.

The LCBO says that California Cabernets are amazingly popular – and rightly so! This one is loaded with fig preserve, nuts, toast, herbs and honey.

It’s an amazingly value-priced wine and ideal for barbecued ribs or rare steak. Other comments are that the nose is vibrant, earthy, fruity, and black fruit-forward. The colour is rich and dark. The taste is full-bodied and robust, but also very smooth and pleasant. It is sure to please as a stand-alone glass of wine or accompanying a meal of red meat, a Texas BBQ, or flavourful cheeses, if travelling in the United States or once import restrictions are lifted.

The Alcohol/Volume is 13.5%. At the February 2025 meeting, 9 out of 14 wine tasters said that they would buy it, with 4 saying that they might buy it.
