The novel The Maidens is written by Alex Michaelides born in Cyprus. This novel is a murder mystery of 333 pages set in London, England, Cambridge and Greece.

There are eight college students known as The Maidens, a secret society of female students, who are core to the storyline leading the reader to learn about their strong connections to Greek mythology throughout the plot. This mystery is chock full of intrigue, surprises, passion, violence and father-daughter relationships.

Mariana Andros, a well known and respected psychotherapist returns to Cambridge to solve the murders of three young women, part of the Maidens secret group. Edward Fosca is a murderer. Of this Mariana is certain. But Fosca is untouchable. A handsome and charismatic Greek tragedy professor at Cambridge University, Fosca is adored by staff and students alike-particularly by the members of The Maidens.

Mariana becomes fixated on The Maidens when one member, a friend of Mariana’s niece Zoe, is found murdered in Cambridge. When another body is found, Mariana’s obsession with proving Fosca’s guilt spirals out of control, threatening to destroy her credibility as well as her closest relationships. But Mariana is determined to stop this killer, even if it costs her everything – including her own life.

Michaelides’s writing style is intended to show the reader and not tell the reader what to think. Thus there is a constant prevailing feeling of mystery which builds in strength to the last two exciting chapters where the reader finally knows who the murderer is.
