On Nov. 7, 2024, the wine tasting group met at Ruth Johnson’s home. The tasting of white wines involved 12 people, while the tasting of red wines involved 11 people. Three of the wines tasted were over $20.00, with one being less than $10.00. Below are the two favourites from this wine tasting:
Italy, Tiefenbrunner, Pinot Grigio, 2023

This 2023 Pinot Grigio comes from Italy. Tiefenbrunner has a notably robust take on Pinot Grigio, crafting wines with greater depth and weight than is typical for this style. This wine is mellow,fresh, balanced, lithe, floral and ripe, with pear, citrus and mineral. Considered dry and full bodied.
This wine is made in Alto-Adige-Trentino, Italy. This area is considered the finest growing zone foor white wine in Italy. They produce over 20 types od wine under the attentive care of expert wine maker, Christof Tiefenbrunner.
Lobster bisque is a recommended food pairing as well as carmelized shallots and grilled fish. The alcohol content is 12.5% and sugar is 4g/l. Price is $20.95. Nine out of 12 people would buy this wine and 3 might buy.
U.S.A., Calfornia, McManis Family Vineyards, Petite Sirah, 2024

This Petite Sirah come from California. Opulent dark berries, baking spices and orange marmalade show on the nose. Full bodied, saturated boysenberry, dried potpourri and malted chocolate glide across the palate, finishing with silken tannins. Aerate and enjoy with barbecue. Score 91. Has the potential to drink until the end of the decade.
While Syrah and Shiraz are the same grapes, Syrah and Petite Sirah are different. Syrah is the result of cross breeding of 2 grapes, Dureza and Mondeuse Blanche. Petite Sirah is actually the cross-breed “child” of Syrah and an almost extinct grape called Peloursin. Petite Sirah was created by Francis Durif in the late 1800’s.
The alcohol content is 13.5%, sugar is 8 g/l. Price is $22.95. Eight would buy this wine, 1 might, and 3 would not.
