On May 4th, we met at the home of Elva Edgar to sample wines from California, New Zealand, Australia, and Ontario. The two most popular selections were surprisingly inexpensive and offered very good value for the money.
Canyon Road – Sauvignon Blanc, 2021

Canyon Road’s Sauvignon Blanc is a budget white wine from California that was selected as the most popular wine tasted at the May meeting. It received the most votes from our members who said that they would buy it. It was also rated highly by LCBO customers who gave it a 4.2 out of 5.0. The price of the wine is $10.95 a bottle, and it has a 13% alcohol content.
Canyon Road uses fruit from central and northern coastal regions of California, and crafts wines that deliver freshness and remarkable value.
This wine is a food friendly medium body wine with notes of grapefruit, herbs and quince. It has a slightly sweet taste with a crisp finish. The wine is a mixture of 82% Sauvignon Blanc, 9% Sémillon, and 9% Riesling grapes.
Serve it with spinach salad, sushi and grilled vegetables. It pairs well with chicken and pork tenderloin.
Mcguigan, Black Label – Cabernet Sauvignon, 2020

Mcguigan, Black Label, Cabernet Savignon is a full body, robust, budget priced wine from South-East Australia that costs $12.95 a bottle. This red wine also has 13% alcohol content. It was the runner-up or in second place, of the most votes from our members who said that they would buy it.
Wine lovers count on McGuigan’s consistent and award-winning quality, as well as good value. Upfront coffee bean, prune and nutmeg flavours are supported by fine ripe tannins and a hint of vanilla. Others reviewers state that has “charming flavours of cherry and blackberry, with a subtle oak infusion of chocolate and vanilla, or as having dark cherry and blackberry flavours that are supported by fine ripe tannins and a hint of spicy oak.
Serve with roasted meats – try it with a Rack of Lamb, or with a Beef Tenderloin. Examples of other great pairings: Grilled Steak, Roast Beef, Lamb Shank, Osso Bucco, Sharp Cheddar Cheese, or even poultry.
