The Page Turners #17

The Book Club continues to host members interested in reading. We read excellent books suggested and then chosen by our members and we are looking for one or two new members to help us continue our excellent selections and discussions.

We are happy to be meeting at The Fairfield Center for Senior’s at 80 Lothian Ave., Etobicoke, ON., every second Thursday at 2pm. They have plenty of free parking available. With 10 active members, it costs each member less than $4.00 per book meeting.

If you are interested in learning more about this club, please contact Kathryn Raymond at kathryn.raymond@rogers.com. I would be happy to set you up as a guest to attend a meeting, meet the members, and see how the club runs.

The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes (390 pages)

On October 13, 2022 members of the book club met to discuss The Giver of Stars, a fiction based on true events written by well-known author Jojo Moyes.

The year is 1937 and Alice Wright from a well to do family leaves London, England and moves to Bailyville, Kentucky, a very small community in the Hill Country. Alice moves to escape her clinging conservative parents to marry Bennet Van Cleve, the son of the Bennett family who own the coal mine.

Alice’s marriage is a huge disappointment, but she finds her path by joining a committed group of rural women delivering books and magazines by packhorse in all seasons into the hills to families who are very poor and without any exposure to education. There is significant push back from the local Kentucky men as they are the breadwinners and rule makers.

As you read this exciting story about the “Packhorse Librarians of Kentucky” it is evident these brave women redefined the term “women jobs”. The author Jo Jo Moyes has brought together a story about relationships, education, community spirit, politics, survival and self-actualization.

Look for this novel also to be in cinemas as production of a movie based on this novel has started.
