Investment Club News #16

The Investment Club met again in person for the first time in several years on September 13th.  It was so good to see everyone and enjoy coffee and cookies again.

After getting reacquainted, we reviewed our portfolio compared to the TSX over our fiscal year, June 30, 2021 vs June 30, 2022.   The TSX was down 6.33% while our portfolio was down 8.86%.   This is the first year since the club’s inception that we have not beaten the TSX.

Discussions

We covered the club direction and had many suggestions and personal preferences such as:

Short term investments – Looking for recommendations for investments for grandchildren’s portfolios.

High dividend investments – Perhaps we should look at more ETF’s.  A discussion followed on ETF’s vs stocks.

Invest 5% of portfolio on speculation or stocks of interest

Speakers and Suggestions

Look for speakers to discuss the following topics:

Young speakers to talk about the future in investing
Insurance strategies
Legacy, trusts
Fixed Income
Dividend portfolio vs ETF’s
Speaker from Carp – age related topics
Topics of interest to the Investment Club

Watch List

We reviewed Berkshire Hathaway and Nvidia, two recent buys (February ’22) which are both down.   Berkshire was a strong hold.  Nvidia gave us some doubt with political problems with sharing technology with China, manufacturing in the US, etc.

Decision:  Hold both, watch and hope.

Since our next scheduled meeting was for the day after thanksgiving, we decided to move it to Monday, October 17th since most of us will be either away, entertaining guests or recovering from a heavy dinner the night before.

Our club is open to all Probus members.    Please feel free to join us at Fairfield Senior Centre at 2:00 pm on the second Tuesday of the month (except for October when the Club will meet on Monday, October 17th ).
