Investment Club News #7

The new season of the Investment Club began September 14th, 2021.   It should be an interesting year with the daily changes in the world we live in.   You will note that the portfolio has been broken down into sectors to assist us in our buy/sell decisions.   This will be fine tuned as we proceed.

Topics Discussed at the Meeting

  • Our year end results compared to the TSX and changes to our investment strategy over the past year
  • Speakers for our October and November meetings.   We would love to hear from you if you have any suggestions or leads for other speakers.   It would be great to get speakers to cover endowment funds, trust funds, insurance, preservation of capital, etc.
  • Plan to look at other sectors e.g., AI, green investments, new technologies, etc.
  • Nancy gave an excellent presentation on Exit Strategies, Value Investing and Institutional Biases.    We could all identify with her comments.    A copy of Nancy’s presentation is attached for your review.

Decisions Made

Sell – Shaw – We have made a substantial profit on Shaw and there is a possibility of a downturn in the near future if the Rogers offer is upended.

Hold – Bank of Nova Scotia – We discussed selling BNS in view of its lack of performance.   It has a good dividend.

Hold – NFI – We do not have a large amount invested in NFI.   The reasons we decided to hold this stock were 1) anticipated growth 2) green investment 3) we believe that people will return to public transit 4) It has made a good comeback this year and is cited to grow.

Overall, this was a good meeting with excellent participation.
