Through the Grape Vine #7

The wine club decided at our last meeting that, going forward, we would collectively explore wine from different countries and regions. Since we all choose wines that suit our individual taste, we would gain more knowledge about competitive wines on an international scale and compare quality and price ranges. This month we experimented with Chilean wines which have an excellent reputation for both quality and price.

Casas Del Bosque – Linda Hasler

Sauvignon Blanc
D.O. Valle de Casablanca 2017 – Chile

I enjoy Sauvignon Blanc, particularly from New Zealand. This Chilean wine was recommended by the Vintages representative at the LCBO who claimed that it stands tall against its counterparts from New Zealand. I have to agree. It is reasonably priced at $14.95 with 13.5% alcohol.

Casas del Bosque is a prestigious family-owned boutique vineyard in Chile, recognized internationally for the high quality of its wines produced from grapes grown in their vineyards in the Casablanca Valley. Pale straw with green reflections. This being a warmer vintage, the aromas are more floral and citrusy than usual, with a note of hay. In the mouth the wine is dry and crisp, with clean, appley flavours and refreshing acidity. Finishes long. Idealy served at 6 – 8ºC with seafood like ceviche, oysters or grilled fish. Herbs like lemon grass, cilantro or basil. Green olives, chutney and all types of goat’s
cheese.

Evheverria Chardonnay – Murray Wood

This charming and elegant Chardonnay with a touch of oak has intense primary aromas of apricots and peaches, with vanilla and toffee notes. This wine is rich but fresh, with balanced acidity and flavours of dried fruit and pineapple. We enjoyed this naked chardonnay from Chile very much. It was a 2018 Grand Reserve and is 14% alcohol. It sells for $15.95 at the LCBO.
